Enhancing the self‐resilience of <scp>high‐</scp> renewable energy sources, interconnected islanding areas through innovative energy production, storage, and management technologies: Grid simulations and energy assessment

Electrification of heating and transportation can be greatly combined with excess energy production from variable renewable sources that exist in many geographical islands. Grid interconnections, where available, play a vital role the system as provide required balance between consumption demand but limitations emerge due to cable capacity other technical constraints, which cases, lead curtailment events. With minimization exchange through islands mainland, islands' self-resilience is enhanced. The Samsø Orkney are used case studies where, among others, specific solutions (a) heat pump districting storage, (b) electrolyzer for hydrogen production, (c) electrical vehicles examined. proposed enhanced by Demand Side Management actions utilizing high availability examined compared reference/current status scenario each island. This work based on detailed model representation, using Modelica language, transfer distribution grid assets, allowing estimation impact electrification level well island level. Simulation results revealed Orkney, annual export reduced 24 GWh corresponding imports slightly increased 13 GWh, reducing 1.4 (77%). As Samsø, 5 while increase 2.0 GWh. losses remain at same before around 2%, some lines have significantly lower traffic higher renewables self-consumption.
